Part of an exhibit mounted by the New York Consumers League, this print documents a display of material on the city's clothing trades, where long hours and low pay were common concerns. The Consumers League, part of the wider National Consumers League founded in 1899, campaigned for wage standards and shorter hours, and it used exhibitions like this one to show the public working conditions behind garment production. The print is attributed to Lewis Hine, who photographed for the League's investigations, and it is estimated to date from around 1908 based on neighboring caption cards.
