The University Club stood on Fifth Avenue at West 54th Street when this glass negative was made around 1905, and its clubhouse was built to look as scholarly as its members. The club, founded for men with college degrees, hired the firm McKim, Mead & White, whose Italian Renaissance design gave the building the look of a Florentine palazzo. The Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded American cities and landmarks in the early twentieth century, captured the building on an 8 by 10 inch plate, a large format that preserved fine architectural detail.
