Seen from above, the Lake Placid Club's buildings, grounds, and surrounding lake and forest show how the Adirondack resort was laid out around 1930. The club was founded in 1895 by Melvil Dewey, the librarian who devised the Dewey Decimal System, and it grew into a major retreat for summer and winter recreation. Aerial views like this one were often made by commercial survey firms, such as Fairchild Aerial Surveys, which photographed towns and estates across the country in the late 1920s. Lake Placid went on to host the 1932 Winter Olympics.
