The Lakeside Inn sits on the shore of Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains, and this print pairs the resort with snowshoeing, a winter pastime that drew visitors to the region's hotels. Lake Placid had already built a reputation as a winter sports destination well before the 1940s, having hosted the 1932 Winter Olympics. The photograph is part of the Wittemann Collection, whose images of American sports and recreation document how leisure travel and winter outdoor activities took shape in the mid-20th century. The Library of Congress dates it only to between 1940 and 1950, so the exact year is not recorded.
