Side-wheel steamers tie up along the shore at Greenwood Lake in this 1910 view, the paddle-wheel boats that once carried summer excursionists across the water. The lake, which straddles the border between New York and New Jersey, drew city families by rail in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and its landings and hotels grew up around that traffic. The photograph's attention to the waterfront, with its boats and docks, records a leisure economy that depended on steam travel before automobiles made lakeside resorts easy to reach by road.
