A 1917 color woodcut poster from The Marchbanks Press in New York joins an eagle, a lion, and a wreath under the title "America's tribute to Britain." The United States had entered the First World War that April, and the poster reflects the wartime effort to present the country as a partner of Britain and its allies. Woodcut was a common technique for American war posters of the period, since its bold outlines and flat color reproduced clearly on walls and in public places. The emblems were chosen to communicate friendship and shared purpose at a glance.
