Georges Braque, the French painter who co-founded Cubism with Picasso, is the subject here, shown in his Paris studio in a photograph by Fritz Henle. Henle worked for the Monkmeyer Press Photo Service in New York, an agency that supplied images to magazines and publishers, and this print was reproduced in the 1950 Yearbook of Art Exhibitions. The photograph's date is uncertain and is given in the record as circa 1950, a period when Braque, then in his late sixties, was producing still lifes, birds and studio interiors that drew wide attention. The image offers a view of an artist at work in a private space, a subject that was popular in mid-century portrait photography.
