William C. Durant, the automobile executive, appears here with his wife in a studio portrait dated June 2, 1928. Durant had founded General Motors in 1908 and built it into a major automaker before losing control of the company in 1920. By 1928 he was running his own Durant Motors, and New York press photographers such as Bain News Service often sought out prominent businessmen like him. The print belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of early twentieth-century news photography from New York.
