Hedda Hopper appears here as a working film actress, a role she held before she became one of Hollywood's most feared gossip columnists. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose negatives are now held by the Library of Congress, took this portrait on October 31, 1929. That was a turbulent moment for actors, as studios were rapidly converting from silent pictures to sound, and many performers with stage training were suddenly in demand. The sitter's later fame makes the picture especially worth a closer look.
