Sailors of the New York Naval Reserves are shown gathered for a church service aboard the U.S.S. New Hampshire, a training ship used to instruct state naval reservists in New York waters. Sunday worship was a familiar part of shipboard routine in that era, and gatherings like this one gave crews a rare chance to assemble together on deck. The Detroit Publishing Company made many views of American life and places around 1900, and this large 8 by 10 inch glass negative preserves fine detail in the rows of men and the ship's setting.
