Aboard the U.S.S. *Nahant*, a group of New York Naval Reserve sailors posed for this 1898 portrait, the year the United States went to war with Spain. The *Nahant* was an older monitor-type warship of the Civil War era, and by the 1890s it served as a stationary training vessel for New York's naval volunteers. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many views of American cities and landmarks, sold photographs like this one, and the large glass negative gives the men's uniforms and faces unusual sharpness.
