This view shows the U.S.S. New York, an armored cruiser, during the naval parade held in New York Harbor in September 1899 to celebrate Admiral George Dewey's victory at Manila Bay the previous year. Ships of the fleet and crowds of spectators filled the water for the event, which drew large public enthusiasm for the navy. The picture is a glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of American cities, landmarks, and events around the turn of the century.
