William Crapo Durant, the automobile executive who founded General Motors, poses here with his wife in a portrait made by Bain News Service in New York. Durant started General Motors in 1908, lost control of it in 1920, and then launched Durant Motors while trying to rebuild his fortune in the car trade. The photograph dates from between 1926 and 1929, when his name remained closely tied to the American automobile boom and a prominent couple made good newspaper material.
