Away from the stage and its handcuffs and water tanks, this photograph shows Harry Houdini beside his mother, Cecilia Steiner Weiss. The Library of Congress dates it to 1907 or 1908 and places it in Rochester, New York, during the years when Houdini was building his reputation as an escape artist. He was known for keeping his mother close through his touring life. Her death on June 17, 1913, hit him hard, and this picture offers a quieter counterpart to the public figure of his later fame.
