The record places Neysa McMein in her own New York studio, a setting that suggests the working life of an illustrator rather than a formal society portrait. McMein (1888–1949) became one of the best-known magazine cover artists of her day, and her studio was a common gathering place for the writers and artists of the Algonquin Round Table crowd. This print is a 1920s studio portrait, and it survives in the Janet Flanner and Solita Solano papers, which is why it also appears in Brenda Wineapple's 1989 biography, *Genêt*.
