Few streets in Caracas carry as much ceremonial meaning as the avenue shown here, which is named for the heroes of Venezuela's independence struggle. The 1957 view shows military formations and the stone gateways, or pylons, that line the route, and the July 5 date in the record matches Venezuela's Independence Day. Under the government of Marcos Pérez Jiménez, who ruled from 1952 until 1958, such parades were a major public display of national pride and state authority. Hamilton Wright's photograph preserves that staged spectacle for researchers of Latin American history.
