Rather than a direct view of the water, this picture reproduces a painting labeled as the work of Jules Lessore, showing piers, wharves and sailing ships in New York harbor. The glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American scenery, cities and artworks in the early twentieth century, and it is dated somewhere between 1913 and 1920. Sailing vessels still crowded the waterfront then, even as steamships and rail freight were reshaping the port, so the scene captures a working harbor in transition.
