This is an artist's drawing of detained immigrants on Ellis Island in New York harbor, drawn by M. Colin and printed in *Harper's Weekly* on August 26, 1893. The island had only recently become the federal immigration station, opening in 1892 to replace Castle Garden at the Battery, so the scene would have been new to many readers. Halftone reproduction let weekly magazines print drawings like this one with a tonal richness that line engraving could not match. The detention shown here points to the inspection and holding procedures that shaped newcomers' first days in the United States.
