Ellis Island, in New York Harbor, is the subject here, and this view belongs to the National Photo Company's large body of work from the early twentieth century. The company produced many commercial views of American landmarks for postcards and sale to the public, and this print, catalogued as number 3163G, likely shows the island's immigration station during the years when it processed the greatest numbers of arrivals, roughly 1892 to 1954. Between 1900 and 1914 especially, millions of people passed through its registry rooms on their way to new lives in the United States, making the station one of the most recognized sites of immigration in the country. The photograph's date is given only as a range between 1909 and 1932, so the exact moment it was taken is not known.
