Ellis Island, the federal immigration station in New York Harbor, is the subject here, shown in a National Photo Company view made sometime between 1909 and 1932. The island opened as the main gateway for arrivals in 1892 and processed millions of newcomers, most of whom came from Europe, before it closed in 1954. The company's catalog numbering suggests it was one of a large series of views sold to visitors and publications, so the image offers a snapshot of how the station was presented to the public in the early twentieth century. Its subjects also point to the people who passed through, whose long wait for inspection became a defining part of the island's story.
