Ellis Island's immigrant processing station in New York Harbor was the entry point for millions of arrivals in the early twentieth century, and this March 1917 print from the George Grantham Bain Collection shows one family passing through it. Bain was a news photographer whose agency supplied pictures to newspapers, so the image was likely made for wide circulation and captioned for a public eager to see who was arriving. By 1917 the island was at the height of its busy years, with inspectors checking travelers for health problems and legal eligibility before they could enter the city. The print is worth studying for the clothing, luggage and expressions of the family, which record the moment between the long Atlantic crossing and the start of life in America.
