A family gazes across the harbor from Ellis Island toward the Statue of Liberty in this view. The island served as the main federal processing station for arriving immigrants from 1892 until 1954, and for many travelers the statue was the first American landmark they saw after the long Atlantic crossing. Dated around 1930, the scene was made after the Immigration Act of 1924 had sharply limited new arrivals, so it looks back on an earlier era of mass immigration. The picture is numbered 16 in the Portrait of America series.
