Ellis Island's immigration station, seen across open water, is the subject of this c1913 print from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's news photographs documented the New York waterfront and the steady flow of arrivals that passed through the station after it opened in 1892. By the 1910s, Ellis Island was the main entry point for millions of people coming to the United States, mostly from Europe, and the view from the water shows the scale of the buildings that processed them. The record tags the picture under emigration and immigration, a reminder of the medical and legal inspections that every arrival faced there.
