Seen from the water, the main building at Ellis Island presents the face that most arriving passengers saw first, as ferries and steamers approached Manhattan's harbor. Opened in 1892, the federal immigration station processed millions of people before it closed in 1954, and the long brick facade with its prominent central tower and dormers became a symbol of the nation's open gateway. Pictures taken from the bay help show how the island's buildings rose directly out of the water, with the arriving crowds passing through their doors after a short crossing.
