Ellis Island's main Registry Building, the red-brick and limestone hall where most arriving immigrants were processed, stands in this view with the Manhattan skyline rising behind it across the water. The island opened as a federal immigration station in 1892 and handled millions of arrivals before closing in 1954. The pairing of an immigrant gateway with the city it fed into makes the scene a compact statement about New York's role in American history, and this 1978 black-and-white view captures the site during the years when it was being rediscovered as a historic landmark.
