Two postcards from the early twentieth century show the Ellis Island Immigration Station in New York Harbor, one pairing an exterior view of the main building with an interior look at the registry floor, where arriving passengers were questioned and examined. Opened in 1892, the station processed the great majority of immigrants entering the United States through the port of New York during its peak years, and the registry hall shown here was the vast room where those newcomers waited, were inspected, and were sorted before being admitted or detained. Photographic postcards like these were sold to travelers and visitors, so they capture how the site was presented to the public as much as how it actually operated.
