Ellis Island in New York Harbor served as the federal station where arriving immigrants were received and inspected from 1892 until 1954. The caption card credits the photograph to F. Gutekunst but gives no date, so the year it was taken is uncertain. Its subject tags, which point to arrival and immigration, reflect the island's role as the first American stop for millions of people entering through the port of New York.
