Arriving passengers filed through the Immigrant Building on Ellis Island, the processing station in New York Harbor that opened in 1892 and received millions of newcomers before it closed in 1954. This stereograph by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that sold stereo views widely, was made around 1904, when the station was at its busiest. Stereo cards like this were meant to be viewed through a special lens, giving the scene a sense of depth. The caption's phrase "just arrived from foreign countries" captures the moment of arrival, when travelers were about to face medical and legal inspection.
