Medical inspections were among the first tests newcomers faced at Ellis Island, and this stereograph records one of them: a physical examination of women arriving from abroad, dated to about 1911. Inspectors looked for signs of disease, infection and physical disability, and anyone flagged could be detained for further observation or sent back. The image is one of the stereo cards from the 1910 to 1920 peak years, when millions passed through the station in New York Harbor. Stereographs were viewed in pairs through a special viewer, so the scene reads with depth and gives a close, documentary sense of the process.
