Ellis Island, in New York Harbor, was the main processing station for arriving immigrants at the port of New York from 1892 until 1954, and this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection shows the kind of crowded arrival scene that made the island famous. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency, made and sold pictures like this one in the early twentieth century, and its negatives now sit in the Library of Congress. The record's title comes from the agency's own caption cards and is unverified, and the date is not recorded, so the exact day and the people shown are unknown. Viewers should note that the glass plate itself is a fragile, small-format record of a busy, often anxious passage through American immigration.
