The steamship Prinzess Irene, a North German Lloyd liner that ran between Bremen and New York, carried the passengers in this 1911 photograph bound for Ellis Island. George Grantham Bain, a news photographer who documented New York life in the early twentieth century, made the image when the island was the country's main immigration station. Arriving passengers were ferried across New York Harbor for medical and legal inspection, a process that could take hours or longer, and the picture captures that brief passage between ship and processing.
