Passengers from the steamship Prinzess Irene, a North German Lloyd liner that ran the Bremen to New York route, are shown stepping onto a ferry bound for Ellis Island. The photograph dates to about 1911 and comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news and feature photographs made by Bain's agency in New York. Ellis Island, in New York Harbor, was the main federal station for processing arriving immigrants in those years, and the transfer from ship to ferry marked the start of the inspections that decided who could enter the country.
