Immigrants from the steamship *Princess Irene* are shown at Ellis Island in New York Harbor in 1911, when the island was the main federal station for processing arrivals at the port. Most passengers in this period were European emigrants traveling in steerage, and they faced medical inspections and questioning by officials before they could enter the country. George Grantham Bain, a news photographer, made the picture, and his collection documents many of the crowds and events of the early twentieth century.
