Ellis Island's immigration station, which opened in 1892, handled millions of arrivals before the 1954 closing, and this 1912 view captures a moment of waiting in the middle of that process. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for its stereographs and news photography, made the print, and its caption dates the scene to October 30, 1912. Those held in the great hall were often families who had already crossed the Atlantic in steerage, now sorting through medical inspections and legal questions before they could be released to the mainland. The picture is worth studying for the crowded, patient stillness of people whose futures depended on the next call.
