Arriving passengers at Ellis Island, in New York Harbor, were the subject of many photographs taken by the Bain News Service, and this glass negative is one of those documents of the island's immigrant processing years. The Bain News Service was a commercial picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, so its pictures were made to be reproduced quickly. Between 1892 and 1954, the federal immigration station on Ellis Island inspected millions of people, many of whom came from Europe. The Library of Congress holds the George Grantham Bain Collection, and its title for this image comes from unverified caption data, so the exact date and the people shown remain uncertain.
