Ellis Island, in New York Harbor, served as the main federal processing station for arriving immigrants from 1892 to 1954, and this glass negative records the people who passed through its halls during that stretch. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of work built largely from the Bain News Service, which supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its title and date are unverified, so the exact moment it captures is uncertain, but the subject fits the island's busiest decades, when millions of newcomers were inspected, questioned and sometimes detained before entering the country. Glass plates like this one preserve fine detail that makes them valuable to researchers today.
