Here the new hospital building on Ellis Island appears alongside the quarantine stations on Swinburn and Hoffman islands in the lower bay, a view that shows the medical side of the immigration station as clearly as its processing halls. By 1902, federal authorities relied on this network of hospitals to isolate and treat arriving passengers who were ill, so that infectious cases could be separated before anyone reached the mainland. The picture was printed in *Quarantine sketches*, a booklet issued by the Maltine Company, a maker of malt-based tonics, which suggests how public interest in the island's medical work had grown by that time.
