Ellis Island's hospital complex, seen from above and looking north, shows the sprawling group of brick buildings that once treated immigrants held for medical inspection in New York Harbor. Opened in the early 1900s, the hospital was one of the largest of its kind, and it was where doctors checked arrivals for disease and sometimes separated families or sent people back when they failed inspection. The 1978 black-and-white view captures the complex during the years when the island was largely abandoned, a useful reminder of how much of the site stood empty before its restoration.
