Castle Garden, the former fort at the southern tip of Manhattan, gives this view its particular setting. From 1855 until federal immigration officials moved processing to Ellis Island in 1892, the circular building was the main point of entry for millions of people arriving by ship. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's statue, a gift from France, was dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886, so a scene that shows both places the monument in the same waters where many newcomers first landed.
