Two scenes share this wood engraving: emigrants gathered on the Battery in front of Castle Garden, and the labor exchange office inside, both sketched by Stanley Fox for *Harper's Weekly* in August 1868. Castle Garden, a former fort at the tip of Manhattan, served as New York's immigrant landing depot from 1855 until 1890, when Ellis Island took over that role. The labor exchange helped newly arrived workers meet employers seeking hands, an effort to route a steady flow of newcomers into jobs. The print preserves a busy, crowded moment at the city's main point of entry.
