Currier's view looks out from the Battery, the tip of Manhattan, toward Castle Garden, the round stone fort that had been built there in the early 1800s to guard the harbor. By 1848 the structure had been turned into a public pleasure ground with concerts and open-air promenades, and the prints of the period often show it as a place where New Yorkers went to see the harbor. Decades later it became the city's first immigration depot, from 1855 until Ellis Island opened in 1892, which gives this quiet harbor scene its later importance.
