Looking south from the Battery at the tip of Manhattan, this lithograph spreads the New York harbor below the viewer's eye as one continuous panorama. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for its scenic and popular prints, issued it in 1892 as one of its many bird's-eye views of the city. Those views were prized because they let buyers survey busy waterfront districts they could never take in from street level. The same year, Ellis Island opened as the federal immigration station, and the harbor shown here was becoming the main entry point for newcomers to the country.
