Looking north from the roof of the Western Union Telegraph Building, this view runs up Broadway toward the heart of Lower Manhattan, where the street's canyon of office towers and wires fills the frame. The Western Union building, completed in 1875 at the corner of Broadway and Dey Street, was once one of the city's tallest structures and a hub for the telegraph lines that carried news across the country. Picture taken from that height, the scene shows how quickly New York was growing upward in the late nineteenth century, with the street below crowded by horse-drawn traffic and pedestrians.
