Taken looking north across the island, this view shows the Main Building, the central structure of the Ellis Island complex. Completed in 1900 after a fire in 1897 destroyed the original wooden buildings, it housed the Registry Room, where most arriving immigrants underwent medical and legal inspection. Architect Edward Lippincott Tilton designed the building in the Beaux-Arts style, and it stayed in use until the station closed in 1954. As a 1978 black-and-white record, the photograph captures the site in the decades after it had fallen silent.
