Ellis Island's main building and its water towers are the focus of this aerial black and white view, a vantage that shows how the complex sat on its small island in New York Harbor. The Main Building, opened in 1900, was the great processing hall where millions of immigrants were examined before entering the United States, and the water towers served the island's own supply system. Taken from above, the photograph makes the scale of the site easy to grasp, with the buildings laid out against the surrounding water. Images from the late 1970s like this one helped document the island's condition as it was being considered for preservation.
