Taken from the west across the ferry slip, this view shows the main building as arriving passengers first saw it from the water. The brick and limestone structure dates to 1900, when it replaced the original wooden station that burned in 1897. Its Beaux-Arts design was meant to impress, and its Registry Room processed millions of immigrants before the station closed in 1954. Made in 1978, the picture records the building in the years after it had been abandoned, before restoration began.
