The Brooklyn Bridge spans the center of this black and white panorama, with the towers of lower Manhattan rising behind it. Designed by John A. Roebling, the bridge was completed under his son Washington Roebling after the elder Roebling died in 1869, and it opened to traffic in 1883 as the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time. The stone towers and steel cables stand out clearly against the skyline, and the monochrome tones give the structure a sculptural weight. The span linked Brooklyn and Manhattan and remains one of New York's most recognizable landmarks.
