The ship Antilia, moored in the foreground, anchors this view of South Street with the Brooklyn Bridge rising behind the waterfront. The Brooklyn Bridge had opened in 1883, and South Street along the East River was then a busy stretch of piers, wharves, and horse-drawn carts. This print is a photochrom, a color process from lithographic stones that the Detroit Publishing Company used for its views of American cities. It was made around 1901 for an album the company kept as a catalog in its office, so it shows both the subject and the company's color printing at its height.
