Mulberry Street, in lower Manhattan, appears here as a busy market street, with peddlers and shoppers crowding the roadway. By about 1900 the street was the heart of the city's Italian immigrant community, and its shops, vendors, and tenement stoops made it one of New York's most familiar streets. The picture was made by the Detroit Photographic Company, which produced color photochrom prints and kept a set like this one as a catalog in its office. The color gives the scene a warmth that the black-and-white views of the period lack.
