Clotheslines strung across a New York City yard give this c1900 scene its everyday character, and the Monday in its title points to the weekly laundry day many households kept. The picture is a photochrom, a process the Detroit Publishing Company used to make color prints by layering several inked lithographic stones over one photograph. Such views were sold widely around 1900 as souvenirs of American cities, so this one records ordinary domestic routine rather than a famous landmark. Notice the crowded buildings behind the laundry, which show how closely city households lived together.
